Anyone test positive with there pregnancies?

I did with both of mine. Because I was induced with both, they just started me on the antibiotics when they started my other meds and there weren't any issues.

I was positive with my second child - they started the antibiotics and then I developed a pretty high fever. They kept my daughter for 10 days to administer IV antibiotics "just in case". Almost 11 years later I don't remember much more than her 10 day stay. It broke my heart to leave her there. But she was very well cared for. She was the only baby in the NICU that could be held (all the others at that time were very premature, so the nurses loved playing with my 10lb. baby when I wasn't there to hold her myself.

My son is deaf because of Group B Strep. I was positive at the time of his birth and my doctors had never tested me, even though I had asked about it. After my son was born he was blue, making grunting noises and would not nurse. My husband and I asked the nurses several times what was wrong and they assured us he was fine. 10 hours later he was air lifted to Shands! He has sepsis and pneumonia and we were told he was not going to make it. Well, he is still with us 10 years later and we thank the Lord everyday. Yes, he lost his hearing but he is alive. For all of you wondering, yes there was a lawsuit and yes we faught for seven years with it and in the end we were happy with the result.

I had our third son at Shands where I tested positive and was given medication right away, he was fine. With our oldest son, I had the same doctors I had with our son who is deaf, and again I wasn't tested even though I asked. Moral of the story, demand to be tested. Better to be safe then sorry!

Heather that is just horrible.

I wonder why they didnt just automatically do the testing. Typically they do it now.

Wow Heather!! So scary. I am glad your son is doing so well. It sucks that he had to lose his hearing, but you guys have a great outlook.

Scary what GBS can do to a newborn.

Wow Heather. I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. I'm so glad you had the strength to fight them in the courts. Sometimes that's the only way to change things.

We didn't want to just run to court, we just wanted them to change their policy. They said the felt no wrong doing, so we felt no other choice. They do test now!!! See, my first two children, when I was under the care of the same doctors, were born in 1997 and 1998. The CDC only recommended that women should be tested. Note, that all three of my boys were born a month early, a clear sign. Their reason was they could test and you could be positive, they give you meds, then you could be positive again by the birth. They also said you could test negitive now and be positive by the birth. So what! Better to be safe then sorry. When I had my third son in Shands, they said the test everyone who comes into labor, right away. This way if your positive, they give you the proper meds. The thing that really burned me was I had read about Group B Step in baby books and magazines and asked them to do the test. They assured me it was not needed. The thing is had I had been at the Health Department, these same doctors would have had to test me under state rules but because I was in thier private practice, they didn't have to. Had they have just done the test, either outcome, I wouldn't have had a legal leg to stand on. The hospital my son was born was also sued for not making it a standard of care for these doctors to test all women coming in to give birth (Like Shands). I don't know if the hospital changed their policy or not.

I just want to bring this to light. I just want people to be aware and demand this test be done. Even if you have to pay for it yourself, which it is VERY cheap to do. Babies die from Group B Strep, mine almost did. God said it wasn't his time but I just never wanted another family to go through what we went through. Very hard to hear "Your son is very sick, we have given him transfusions and we think he will not make it through the night. Make plans now." Most sick feeling to go through and to think it could have all been avoided!

I went into labor with our 4 month old daughter 6 weeks early, so I had not been tested yet. I was apparently positive because about 2 hours after our daughter, Bindi was born she had a seizure. After alot of tests we were told she was sepsitic due to GBS. It was the scariest next few days of my life as we were told she may not make it. She pulled through and after 14 days we were able to take her home at 4 lbs 15 oz. She is now healthy as could be with no permanant damage. Although I had delivered my son about 8 weeks early, the doctor didn't test me early for GBS. Now I am in the high risk category and will be tested and treated early if we decide to have another child. Thank God I was sent to Shands to deliver my daughter though. She couldn't have gotten any better care
