One of my best friends is nearing the end of her pregnacy and a couple of times she has joked about where all of this "baby-weight" really comes from.
Here's an answer I recent found... So an average baby weighs 7.5 lbs. The extra 20lbs comes from... Extra fat storage to ensure nutrients and energy during pregnancy 7lbs. Increased body fluids 4lbs. Increased blood 4lbs. Breast growth 2lbs. Enlarged uterus 2lbs. Placenta 1.5lbs.
I am scared to death to gain weight. I have been eating salads everyday. I am 6 months pregnant and have already gained 15 pounds! Now people tell me that you don't really gain a bunch of weight until the last month or so
I gained 65+ lbs and plenty of that is still here. Hope it goes away once we're done nursing. But in my defense...I also had a 9# 42-weeker and idiopathic hydramnios (extra water for no particular reason.) My goal next time would be less than 50 seeing how thhe first went down.

And it's not like I was overeating, either. I actually skipped a lot of meals and finally went to a nutritionist b/c I couldn't find food I could eat. I ate it once and didn't want to see it again. I was nauseated for a while. But the stupid weight just kept coming on from 5, 6 mos on. And on and on.... I say 65+ b/c it was 65 at my last visit and I still had another half of a week before they induced me at 42 weeks. So who knows what the final result was. 65 was scary enough.

When I was pregnant I didn't stress about gaining weight. I knew it was inevitable and I figured if I stressed over getting on the scale at every appointment I would be miserable for 9 months. It is very disappointing to me to hear of moms that practically starve themselves throught their pregnancy in few of gaining a few extra pounds. My only concern was my baby being healthly, not me losing my perfect body.
Abanker: Are you referring to me as a "mom that practically starves herself"? I hope not. My concern is in gaining a ridiculous amount of weight that I will have a terrible time taking off. I want nothing more than to have a healthy, happy baby but that doesn't mean I have to eat everything in sight and have no concern for MY health as well. By no means do I have a perfect body, I have dealt with weight problems my entire life. My interest is in eating well and being an appropriate weight for delivery AND a sufficient weight for my daughters health.
I only gained 19 lbs. (I think that I was lucky). I was borderline for gestional diabetes so I had to really watch what I ate. Pretty much a diet of fruit, salad, and meat. I only drank water (and now that's really all I drink). I gave birth to a very healthy 7 lbs 14 ounce baby boy almost 4 months ago. I lost all baby weight and still a losing and really the only thing that I can credit it to is nursing! So you don't have to eat like the food is going out of style to have a healthy baby. What's important is that you take your vitamins and eat healthy!
I'm sorry chargedhemi if it seemed as though my comment was directed at you. I'm speaking in general of a lot of young pregnant women that are more concerned with what they look like than the baby's health. I also see this a lot when it comes to their decision not to breast feed; mostly for selfish reasons.
Abanker: Ohhh, no problem....I just didn't want anyone to think I was worried about the body thing. That is totally not where I was coming from, sorry if it sounded that way. Have a great day!
Well,...... I am due to have our second son in about 5 days and have gained 40 lbs. It's weird b/c all my friends look at me and say, "Wow! You are ALL belly!" I'm like, well, I've gained 40 lbs, and it can't be all in my belly! haha I gained the exact amount of weight with my first son and really had no problems getting it off after he was born. Hopefully, that will be true with this one, too! I try not to worry about it and realize that it's just temporary and after he's born, I can start focusing on getting my body back.
