I read this book when I was pregnant (OK, I read A LOT of books when I was pregnant and still do.) It always did kinda freak me out w/ the extreme possibilities.
My midwife's OB, when doing an ultrasound, even told me to read the Girlfriend's Guide instead. (And I added my own Ina May's book, Birthing from Within, Henci Goer, etc....) I'm glad there's been an update. I wonder if it's enough? Or do people like the facts -- that is the part of the book I liked. It had some varied information in it. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24114136/ Love it or leave it? What do you think? Elizabeth Mommy to Jodi (4/17/06) E-mail me: eguth@ocala.com |

I could take it or leave it. I'm not really biased one way or another on the "What To Expect" books. I thought the first one was helpful. Although I was told to read the "Girlfriend's Guide" since a lot of women told me that the "What" book scared a lot of pregnant women with all the extremes that could happen.
I actually I have the other book "What To Expect The First Year" and I think I've opened that book maybe a total of 10 times. Making the decision to have a child - it's momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking outside your body. Proud Mom to Summer Grace (6/3/07) |

I think its good that authors update resources, especially with the nature of childbirth. It's amazing how woman have been birthing since the beginning, but the business of childbirth and information seems to change with each decade. Info my mother was given is contradicting to todays recommendations. I read books by Ina May, I agree with you Elizabeth on the Birthing from within. In the book there are exercises (creative tasks) to help with fear and ways to prepare your mind and body for the birth - Its great to do them with girlfriends.. I really found the Ina May's Guide to Childbirth to be very insightful. Regarding the what to expect topic... Its a quick general reference. When I was pregnant I learned to take info and suggestions with a grain of salt.
