Mine outgrew it (only used it when she was tired anyway) a little more than a year old.

My daughter sucked her thumb until she was 6 or 7 (years!). It bothered so many people, strangers even, but never bothered me. Neither her pediatrician nor dentist were alarmed- her bite was fine and she did eventually have braces, but only for crowding of the teeth.

From the moment my daughter was born she was sucking her thumb, tried all the different pacis and wouldnt take them, well now my daughter is 8 yrs old and she finally has stopped sucking her thumb, i have worked with her for years, trying to get her to stop, so i finally stopped worrying about it and she stopped on her own.

My son sucked his thumb and quite frankly I loved it. It was a lot better than having to find the lost pacifier. he stopped at about three. he was always reasonable and I told him he was a big boy and didn't need to do that anymore. he quit. A dentist had told me a tip in case he didn't stop would be to put an ace bandage on his elbow. This would prevent him from bending it to get it to his mouth. He said hot sauce doesn't work b/c they get used to it. The dentist said you don't have to worry about damage until after age six or so because that is when the teeth "set".
