Hi Moms:

Felt the need to share some information with you all that is extremely important. If your child is on Singulair, or your Dr. wants to prescribe it, please reconsider. Not everyone has trouble taking this medicine, but for others it is very dangerous. Many parents don't realize that the change in behavior is due to Singulair, and NOT a phase the child is going through. If your child is on Singulair, and is acting out more than normal(throwing things, response seems much worse than situation, trouble at school because of behavior, etc.) please consider the singulair. I myself ended up in the hospital for 3 days after being on this medicine for 8 days. I can not ever take this drug, and a lot of parents are discovering the same thing with their children. NOT all kids will have problems with it, but if you are scratching your head because of your child's behavior (you don't recognize your own child), and your child is taking this drug, please, please, please look to the Singulair. There is a great website with a LOT of information about this...www.medications.com/se/singulair . If you have any doubt, please check it out...just felt the need to get the word out, as some children have died because of this medicine. If it has helped you and/or your child, that is great, and this message does not apply to you...but it seems a large number of people ARE having serious problems.

Some adverse reactions include:
In children: otitis, sinusitis, diarrhea, nausea.
And in others: fatigue, headache, weakness, cough, runny nose, abdominal pain, rash, fever and Churg-Strauss syndrome.

(Happened to have my drug guide next to me now. Smiler )

What kind of problems did you have taking it? Just curious.

Hi Elizabeth! Thanks for your response...it is very helpful...but the reactions that I'm refering to are much worse than the ones that you listed. Nightmares, hallucinations, pain in joints/legs, aggression, suicidal thoughts, severe depression, stomach pain, heart palpitations, etc.

I myself came down with an extremely bad upper respiratory infection and when I arrived at the hospital, my heart rate was 166 beats per minute...I was in the hospital for 3 days while they gave me IV antibiotics for my URI, and I was the youngest person in the cardiac unit, because they could not find anything wrong with me, but my heart rate only came down to the 120's. They did every test you can think of, and found nothing wrong with me. The Singulair is what made me sick, because I have been fine since I stopped taking it.

I would have to agree that it doesn't effect all kids, as my daughter who is 9 has been on this since she was 3 and son who is 6 has been on since about 4 yrs old. There has never been a issue with behavioral problems or such as you mentioned. IF anything it helps them tremendously.

All meds have side effects to a degree and some affect people differently. Like me and DD are on the same Claritin and it does wonders for her she has no problems but with me it just makes me feel I guess you could say goofy. So all meds are different.

We do thank you for your info Smiler Everyone should always read up on meds. I know I'm always cautious of any and all meds but I have always been on them from a young age because of my asthma and both our kids have asthma and allergies. So I read up on any and all meds they are prescribed! You just never know
