I made these cookies w/ my mom (realistically I bet *she* made them) when I was a little. We delivered them to shut-ins and to family friends. She misplaced the recipe for several years and finally found it about 6 years ago. Today, my DD and I made them. I gave her a little dough to roll out and a cookie cutter but she ate her dough. Big Grin

Here are the recipes for the cookies and icing:

Oatmeal Cookies
2 1/2 C sifted all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 C butter, softened
3/4 C sugar
2 Tbsp milk
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 C raw quick-cooking rolled oats

Combine flour, baking powder, salt & sugar in mixing bowl. Add butter, milk, egg & vanilla. Beat until well blended, about 2 min. Stir in oats. On lightly floured board with floured rolling pin, roll dough (in 2-3 batches) out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into shapes. Bake on ungreased (or un-greased teflon-coated-wayy outdated) cookie sheets at 375 about 15 min. Remove from pans & cool. Ice & decorate as desired.
Makes about 3 1/2 doz depending on size. In 1985, cost $1.48.

Easy decorator icing

In mixer bowl place 1/3 C solid white shortening, about 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp butter flavoring & 1 tsp white vanilla; blend until well combined. Add 1 pound confectioner's (4X) sugar & 1/4 C water. Beat at medium to high speed at least 5 minutes. Divide into portions & tint each to a desired hue with paste food colors.
Makes about 2 C. Test kitchen cost: 85 cents.
