Ok so Summer is a year old now and we're trying to transition her over to whole milk. Nothing seems to be working for her. She might drink half a sippy cup full for the total day. Is this enough for her?
We tried to transition her with formula and 1 ounce of milk and then formula and 2 ounces of milk until she was completely off formula but now she just seems to shun milk completely. I've even tried chocolate milk but no avail. If anyone out there has any suggestions or tips please help me! I'd love to hear some ideas on how to get Summer to drink her milk. Will she eat other dairy products, such as yogurt and cheese? That will help her get her calcium and fat content in as she gets adjusted to milk. As for milk, if she doesn't like chocolate milk, how about strawberry or vanilla? Some kids just aren't big milk drinkers, but just keep trying. Even half a cup is better than none. Good luck!

Elizabeth is almost 2 and to this day, has never had a whole cup of milk. She just plain won't drink it. We tried vanilla milk, chocolate milk, Silk soy milk, carnation milk and finally figured out that if I half and half white milk with a bottle of strawberry danimals (liquid yogurt) she'll drink it. I also give her lots of cheese and yogurt.
I can remember reading somewhere that someone else went through the same thing and ended up figuring out OJ and milk...sounds gross, but she said her daughter drank it??? I think you just have to give it some time and try some different combinations and supplement w/ other dairy products until you find something. Good luck...I've been there Erin OcalaMom.com Moderator Mom to Cooper and Elizabeth |

I went through the same thing when my boy was 1 year old. He would not take any milk. I tried everything kept switching. I finally was to the point.. .where he was not drinking milk at all. I called our Dr. & wondered what should I do? She told me not to give him anything else but milk. No juice.... no other combinations nothing but milk. I did this & within in a week or less he started drinking his milk. Now he loves his milk & has for the last say 6 months.
They will start drinking it when they know they can't have anything else. |

What about smoothies, or yogurt, or goat's milk or almond milk, etc...?
I personally hate milk, so I know there are ways to get calcium, fat, etc... without drinking cow's milk. Also, IMO, when kids know you want them to do something really badly, it's funny how all of a sudden they lose interest in it. KWIM? Once I start acting all nonchalant, it can be cool to do something again. And from 1-2 food consumption isn't great. They only gain a couple of # on average. Mine gained 2ish. What about eating cereal with milk in it? Also, my daughter used to love milk and then just all of a sudden didn't want it anymore. I didn't really want to give her chocolate milk because of all the sugar and because I thought she would never want regular milk again after having chocolate. So I resorted to Ovaltine. It's chocolate milk but has TONS of vitamins in it unlike your normal Hershey's or Nesquik mix. I warm it up to room temperature and she loves it!

I'm guessing her formula was warm? Are you heating up her milk?
I just know even when my mom transitioned my brother from breast to cow's milk, he had to have warm milk (I say for 10 years, she said only until preschool, lolol) Elizabeth Mommy to Jodi (4/17/06) |

You guys rock! I knew I'd get some great ideas on this topic from y'all. So thank you!!!!
She eats cheese and yogurt so that's a plus in my favor. I've also gotten her some applesauce with calcium in it so I'm hoping that helps some as well. Also got some instant pudding so when that is mixed with whole milk that'll be another source of calcium too. I've written down all the ideas you guys have given me and I'm going to try them and hey as a last resort I'll have to do the nothing but milk to drink if nothing else works for her. And Elizabeth, Summer didn't have her formula warmed at all. She drank it at room temp. So maybe I can try heating it a little to see if that makes it easier on her. Thanks again!!!!! You know -- another tip I just thought of (I got lectured when I was pregnant for not getting enough calcium and was told to at least try this)
- cook oatmeal or grits in whole milk instead of water. Elizabeth Mommy to Jodi (4/17/06) |
