My 4 year old daughter is having her tonsils and adenoids removed Sept. 15th, and I am totally freaking out. I am terrified that she has to be put under general anesthesia, and then the amount of pain that she will be in once she comes home (the same day), as well as the possibility of bleeding. Has anyone else already gone through this that can offer some advice? What helped you, and what didn't?

Hi,
Two of my children had their sdenoids and tonsils removed. The procedure was not at all bad, they both had it done at the Florida Surgical Center in Gainesville. Neither one of my kids had much pain, they were eating french fries a few hours later. Aimee |

I had mine done at the Florida surgical center 20 years ago and afterwards I was eating ice cream and mash potatoes but then switched back to hard food in a matter of days. I don't remember having much pain. It felt like another sore throat becasue I had so many problems in the pass with them.

Thank you so much Aimee and BaxterOni for your reponses. I feel a little better. My daughter is having hers done at Surgery Center of Ocala. So I hope we have the same results. From what I understand there are several methods that can be used, and depending on which one, the level of pain can be different. I know she will feel so much better after this is over, but I hate what we have to do to make that happen.

My oldest had tubes and adenoids done when he was barely 2. My youngest had tubes when he was just 1. Both came through fine. The oldest was done at MRMC because of his irregular heartbeat. He was cranky coming to but was great other than that. I was a nervous wreck. From the time they give them oral meds to prep them for surgery until it is over is under about an hour. It went much faster than I'd expected. The hardest part is watching them roll the bed away and you can't go. I'll say a prayer for you. WHo is doing yours?

I had my T&A done in 2nd grade; my mom did the same year but was in her 30s.
The younger, the less painful. And I hated the mask -- but I think kids can choose their flavor now? Mine hurt afterwards -- I was eating soft foods that day. I swear it hurt forever but my mom said I was on hard foods in a couple of days. But I was double the age. My mom, however, since she was older, had a much more painful recovery. I've always heard it's just much less painful the younger you get it done. I can't believe they have changed so much -- we had to stay overnight back in the stone ages, lol. We had Thompson with my first son. LOVED him! We had one of his associates with the second son. He was good but not very chatty for working with young kids.

Thompson is fantastic.
He does not do unnecessary surgery. Friendly. Personable. Cute w/ that little head piece on. I saw him w/ some allergy issues in college. Allergist wanted me to consider surgery for a deviated septum. Saw Thompson for a couple of appointments -- no surgery. He was the one who finally told me why I randomly had developed allergies (common at 3 key ages he said), etc... I drove from Gainesville, where I lived at the time, to see him. That is who my allergist at the time said he would send his mother to if she had issues. If I ever needed to see that specialty again or DD did, we would most definitely go back to him. That's awesome to know. Thank you so much. He did say he was very conservative when it came to surgery, and then he took one look in my daughters mouth, and said, "oh, this is a definite case for surgery." Her tonsils were so enlarged, you couldn't see the back of her throat. He said it is like she is breathing through a straw. So, I know that this NEEDS to be done, but I still can't help but worry about my "baby". I know she will be so much better off once this is done...I'm just dreading the process. Thank you for the info on Dr. Thompson though, that does help a lot! |

I know. I can't imagine what it would be like to watch your child being wheeled off under someone else's care and just pray for the best. Is there someone you can have hang out w/ you during the surgery?
I think I remember when I had it done (though it was ages ago, and my mom is a health care provider, and the anesthesiologist was my ballet teacher's husband so it could have been an exception?) my mom came back until they totally conked me out. Maybe they will let you? And she had my grandmother and our minister there w/ her, lol. Elizabeth Mommy to Jodi (4/17/06) |

My Mom is coming up to stay with my 1 year old so I don't have to wake him up @ 5:30am, and that way I can be with my daughter without having to worry about my son also. So, I will be there with her alone. My husband wants to take off work to be there, but I don't think he really needs to. He works in Tallahassee, so it's not like he's in the local area during the week... Never a dull moment! I'll just bring a book, or a magazine. Don't get much time to just sit and read, so I will try to take advantage of that, but probably won't be able to concentrate...

I am now a grandma but 44 years ago when my son
was 6 years old he had suffered with ear aches for so long it broke my heart when he got a cold because it always led to infection. He had been on penicillin so much he developed an allergic reaction against it. The Doctor advised he have his tonsils and adnoids out. We went with it. We gave him jello, ice cream and other soft items he liked as advised by Doc. His recovery was very quick and he never suffered from ear and throat infections again. Wish we would have done it sooner. |
