For some reason I am feeling the urge to learn how to sew. Does anyone have any recommendations as to a good sewing machine for a beginner? Thanks!

I had the same urge a year ago.
I got a Singer Simple -- I actually found a brand new one on ebay and got it for less than it was new at Target. They aren't much anymore -- this one cost about $100 in the stores IIRC.
Slow as I am w/ this, my mom just helped me set it up and I successfully sewed some stuff! Yippee!!

I have a Singer, too. It is my first one. I've had it for a few years and don't get to sew as much as I would like to. But I have made a couple of quilts, pillow cases, curtains, burp clothes, and some other things for my daughters bedroom. I was a novice and was able to figure out what to do by reading the directions that came with it.

The one I have says "Singer, with 70 sewing functions" on it.

Happy Sewing!

My first Singer was my grandma's-the big pedal type. Then I got one in 87 lasted till 2004. I have a Singer Esteem and am really happy with it. They are very kind about helping you learn to use it. Also, I learned that I messed up with my use of needles. Singer sent me a book for free that taught me the basics in areas you might not think about. I made my babies' clothes, including a double layered christening gown. Not good at sewing but smart enough to get help if am in over my help. thank you Monday Night Bible Study ladies.

BTW abanker, buying new gives you a warranty. I did not understand sewing machines and I think it would have lasted longer had I knew more about basics. I wanted an expensive german model for this last machine but could not afford it.
Then they told me it was $75 an hour for lessons. I did not charge that to teach people how to use computers and manage networks. go figure. Take your time. with a name like abanker, you have the ability to follow directions and think it through when the directions don't fit the job.

Abanker did you get your sewing machine?

I only ask sinc eI just got mine and its a bit scary what these newer ones have on them. thankfully my mom and a few other fellow moms are going to help me get the hang of it. in just a few hours I will be making skirts for my three girls. then maybe some boxers for my son so he doesnt feel left out of my new play toy.

does anyone know of any sewing clubs that are open to new members?

I know of one in dunnellon a friend of mine is doing but other then that im at a loss and Id love to learn by doing not just by patterns.

I have not purchased one yet. If I don't buy one before, I think I am going to ask for one for Christmas. I would like to be able to make things for my daughter as well.
