Tips for making reading a part of daily life (compliments of the National Institute for Literacy):
* Share conversations with your child over meal times and other times when you are together. Children learn words more easily when they hear them spoken often. Introduce new and interesting words at every opportunity. * Read together daily. Spend time talking about stories, pictures and words. (I add -- read the newspaper, cereal box -- anything!) * Be your child's best advocate. Keep informed on your child's reading progress and ask the teacher how you can help your child. * Be a reader and a writer. Children learn habits from the people around them. * Visit the library often. Story times, computer, homework help and other activities are available. Anybody have any tips to add?
